Dental bone graft: when is it needed?

A dental bone graft is the reconstruction of bone volume in the area that will receive an implant. It is usually indicated when bone has decreased after tooth loss, through advanced gum disease, or through long-term denture use. The need is defined by imaging, during the evaluation.

How it works at Well

First the evaluation, then the decision.

Not every implant needs a graft. What answers whether your case needs one is the imaging and the planning, not a promise.

01

A 2-hour first consultation

The team evaluates the whole case: bone condition, general health, habits, and healing, before any decision about a graft or an implant.

02

Imaging and digital planning

A 3D CT scan shows the volume and quality of available bone. The case is planned virtually, with the implant and the prosthesis designed from the start.

03

The graft, if indicated

When it is indicated, the graft rebuilds the volume needed to receive the implant, following the plan defined for your case.

04

Implant and rehabilitation

With the bone prepared, the implant and the prosthesis follow the same digital plan.

Why bone decreases.

  • After the loss of a tooth, the bone in that area tends to reduce
  • Advanced gum disease can compromise the supporting bone: see gum treatment
  • Long-term use of a removable denture is also associated with bone loss
  • Whether your case needs a graft is answered by imaging, not by an estimate

Where does the graft material come from?

The material and the technique are defined in the planning for your case, after the imaging and the evaluation.

How long until I can have the implant?
